Safari in my own backyard

Don't ever let anyone tell you tv is bad for your kids. Too much tv is probably bad, but tv - or let me rephrase that - NOGGIN, is one of my best friends.

Emma's imagination is flourishing. She continues to act out the plot lines of her favorite shows after watching them. Today she had me crawling around on my hands and knees in our backyard looking for dinosaur tracks. After we found them (who knew there were so many dinosaurs left in Encino!) we hung out on the stone pathway watching the ants "build a bridge" and a "playground" with "slides and swings." I pay $90/month for combined internet and cable. We use the internet all day every day and the cable for a few 20 minute cartoons on Noggin. I bitch about the $90 but to see the joy on Emma's face when we were looking for "Tracks, Mama, come on, dinosaurs!" I realize it is worth it. I am an actor and a writer, but I could never inspire my kiddo like Ni Hao, Kai Lan does!

Ben has moved into a new stage of "baby" recently. The kid cannot stop laughing. EVERYTHING is funny - even Emma beating on him or sitting on him squishing him makes the kid crack up. Today at lunch, Daddy was turning his head away then looking back at him quickly with a funny face and I thought the babe was going to choke he was laughing so hard. Later Emma was pulling on his toes - seriously, it looked like it hurt - but no tears, just giggles of delight at the attention.

The weening process has begun and although he didn't seem to interested in formula to begin with, he seems to have no problem with it. We are at a 4 nursings to 2 formula ratio and within the week I hope to be at 3-3, then done in 2 to 3 weeks. Ben had some sweet potatos for the first time today and seemed to enjoy them, and he continues to house his rice cereal. I got me one of 'dem 'dere fancy Magic Bullets at Costco today. I am excited about making my own baby food purees again. Emma LOVED them, I am hoping Ben will, too.

Nemo down! Call 911!

Poor Ben. He just may be in therapy by age 2. Yesterday I picked him up and strapped him into his car seat. He wiggled a bit and smiled that big toothless grin that I love. I leaned in and gave him a big kiss on the cheeks and said, "Good doggy." Then tonight we had a lovely family bbq out on our deck. After dinner, Brian was holding Ben but needed to hand him off to me so he could help Emma do something and he said to me, "Here, take this."

Emzilla and I had a girls afternoon out this afternoon at a 2 year old buddy's birthday party and daddy and Ben stayed at home and bonded doing typical guy stuff - you know, napping and farting and stuff... The birthday party was Nemo-themed which is always a crowd pleaser with the 24 month old jet set crowd. There was a Nemo pinata hanging in a tree - Emma spotted it immediately. She kept jumping trying to touch it but it was about 7 feet up. "Emma no reach! Emma no reach!" She would walk away, play a bit then come right back to the spot and jump again trying to grab it. "Emma no reach!" She must have tried 20 times. The girl is persistant!

Later the toddlers were playing with water balloons - there were 3 boys and Emma. The boys had no problem throwing the ballons and breaking them. Emma was being all gentle holding the balloon ever so lovingly. When it finally did break she was a bit upset, "Mama, Emma break it!" It's okay, baby girl. It's a water balloon, you are supposed to break it. "Mama. Break it. Balloon! Breaked it!"

Finally the time came to bust down the pinata. I have to tell you, I spend my days saying, Emma, please don't hit Ben. Then we go to a party and I'm all, "Emma, go ahead, beat the crap out of a beloved fish..." I might as well have given her a gun and told her to shoot Elmo! The boys had no problem whacking poor Nemo with a wiffle bat - but Emma took one swing, barely touched the fish, and decided she was done. Ha! When he finally busted open (the mama of the birthday boy had to finish Nemo off!) and the candy came pouring out, the other kids jumped on Nemo and wildly started stuffing candy into their "loot" bags. Emma was just kinda hanging out on the sidelines. Finally after a bit of encouragement she picked up a tootsie roll pop and stuck it in her mouth. She pulled it out immediately and handed it to me, "Here, Mommy, Emma no like it." She has never had a lollipop before and didn't know to remove the paper! Some would say I am depriving my kid of childhood pleasures. I say I just never thought to give her a lollipop before and hey - maybe just maybe, I am saving the gal from a future of rotten teeth!

Racing Day!

Emma is obsessed with running races. She got it from Ni Hao Kai Lan - her newest girlfriend. On the show Kai Lan and her buddies are always doing something fun and Emma imitates them for the rest of the night. She even uses the Chinese from the show. Tonight she was standing on one side of the room and she yelled, "EE, IR, SAN!" (one, two, three) then took off like a mad woman across the room. She did this over and over and over!

Earlier today I needed to stop by Babyr r us to grab a shower gift. As we pulled into the parking lot, some doo doo head cut us off and I hard to swerve. Emma yells from the backseat, "Careful, Mama!" ...backseat driver already!

She woke up this morning with extra stinky toddler breath... Daddy wondered if it had anything to do with the giant piece of fettuchini from last nights meal that was in her mouth the ENTIRE NIGHT. It must has been laying perfectly across the front of her gums like chewing tobacco as it didn't even have a nibble out of it.

Finally, Emma wouldn't go to bed last night without her balloon from Trader Joes. She knows when she gets the balloon she has to "hold on tight!" When I went in to check on her at 11pm before I went to bed, she was fast asleep - STILL clutching the string on the balloon! I grabbed daddy and we had a good laugh - at least she was paying attention to our instructions for once!

Into the thick of it!

Time keeps on slippin' slippin' slippin'...

Last night we went out to dinner with some good friends in Burbank. We got a booth thinking it would be easier to contain Emzilla - NOT! She colored, she jumped up and down on the bench, she talked in her outside voice. I had fed a her a bit before we went to stave off the crankies - it worked, she wasn't cranky for food, just excited to be out with Daddy and her family at a restaurant. When a little boy sat down in the booth behind us it quieted her for a while as they flirted with each other over the wall between the booths! As soon as our friends sat down we flagged down the waitress and ordered - we weren't sure what our window of time was going to be. When the waitress left, Tina said something like, okay, we've got about 5 minutes - go! Meaning who knows what will happen with toddler and baby so lets get the important conversation out of the way now! HA! At one point Daddy and I were talking about whether we wanted to have another kid or not and I said to Ben that it was his decision and asked him what he thought. Emma piped up with perfect timing, "NO!"

It was kind of toasty out after lunch today, so I filled the kiddie pool and Emzilla went for a swim. Ben was hanging out poolside enjoying the random sprinkles of water from his sister's splashes. It was very relaxing until an LAPD chopper started circling overhead. Emzilla yells, "Mama, hairplane!" - (yes, Hairplane). I tried to get her to say helicopter, but alas, it was hairplane every time it circled - which was at least FIFTY times. At about circle 51, I decided that there was something going down in my quiet little 'hood and wrangled the children indoors and locked the security screens. I figured if the outlaw they were trying to chase down wanted to go for a swim in our pool before his inevitable incarceration, he could do it without us. Would you believe that chopper circled for over 90 minutes? I still have no idea what was happening!

Early this evening we had to make a run in rush hour traffic to West LA to pick up a sit n stroll car seat/ stroller for our journeys east from a friend that was generously willing to lend us his. My buddy has a 2 year old and our kids had never met so I was excited to introduce them. Emma decided to play the shy card and wouldn't even look at Dillon, until Dillon wanted to say hello to Ben - then Emma stepped in between them with her back to Dillon to keep her from touching Ben. I cracked up. I don't know if she was being protective or selfish!

Poor Ben cried like a madman the entire ride home in traffic. I thought maybe he was hungry but he had a ginormous poopy diaper. Now I know I wasn't going to talk about pooh for awhile but I have a question for you. If what he eats comes out of his bunghole looking exactly like what I put in his mouth, does that mean his digestive system is not ready? Seriously, the kid ate a serving of pureed peas for lunch at noon, and by 6pm the exact thing arrived in his diaper. I was like dude, at least get some of the nutrition out of the food first - maybe a little vitamin A or something - there are kids starving in Africa and you are just wasting this stuff!

To end on a happy note - Daddy has never eaten a chocolate pudding pie in a graham cracker crust before so I busted out the fixins tonight so he can have his virgin taste when he gets home later this evening. I mean, really, chocolate pudding! Graham cracker crust! The best combo ever! What was his Mama thinking depriving him of this pleasure as a kid?? I put the kids to bed tonight and sliced off a giant piece and practically snorted it it was so good!! WAIT A MINUTE, maybe she did make them when Daddy was a kid, but like me - ate if after the kids went to bed so she wouldn't have to share!!! Smart lady...

CATCH!

Phew! It is harder and harder to find the time to post my memories here - especially on the weekends. Cliche as it is, I don't know where the time goes...

Emzilla continues to amuse. Her speech is amazingly good. I listen to her string long sentences together, playing pretend, and mimicking her favorite show's plot lines regularly now. Her memory is better than mine (that isn't very hard... that is why I blog, so I can remember the little things!) and her social skills are blossoming.

Saturday night we had a work function so Emma got to go to her "Uncle" Markus's house and play. Markus is the biggest kid on the block so they had a great time. In church Sunday morning at the usual quiet moment, Emma yells, "Mommy, go Markus house!" Then she started a pretend game of catch with the pretend dogs, "Cassidy, CATCH! Apollo? Apollo! Po-po? Doe-doe, CATCH!" "Want apples, dogs? CATCH!" I was holding Ben trying not to drop him because I was shaking so hard from trying not to laugh out loud. Poor Daddy got to wrestle her into whispering - not an easy job!

We had a awesome Father's day. After church, we came home and had some lunch and all of us took 2 hour naps - my kind of Sunday! Then we got up and bbq'd up some rib-eyes and played bocce ball in the back yard. Emma was throwing balls right along side of us using both hands! Her left arm hit the target more than her right, but I think she kind of favors the right when coloring and eating. She is definitely still in her ambidextrous stage. Whenever she tossed the ball she would yell, "Whohoo! Emma - awesome!" or "Yes! Emma good job!" She even praised Daddy and Mommy a few times on our throws!

Ben is getting the hang of the rice cereal thing. I may try him on a veggie tomorrow and see what he thinks. He is exactly 5 months as of yesterday and growing like crazy. He rolls back to front and front to back with ease now and although still very independent, he does want changes of venue more often. He laughs a lot when Emma is playing with him, but still occasionally cries if she yells to close to him -he is not a fan of anyone who talks loud! Ha!

I thought he was sprouting another tooth today when I realized it is more of those hard little pustules on his gums. I have no idea what they are but they go away after a few days and don't seem to be painful to him whatsoever. Weird weird weird...

Silliness of the day: I am experimenting with our living room floors. They are hard wood and I had an area rug in the center of the floor. The damn dogs use the rug as a back scratcher and shed like mad on it. I have to vacuum it daily as it gets hairy and smelly fast. I vacuumed it up yesterday, then rolled it up and stored it in the garage wondering if my mad dog hair proplem would lesson... It has been 24 hours and I swear the living room looks so much less dusty and hairy as they have nowhere to rub and lose the hair. Hmmmm, I'll keep you posted as I know you are all on the edge of your seats wondering what will happen.

Anyway, the silliness was: Emma was sitting in her Mickey Mouse plastic chair watching her show on tv. She leaned forward in the chair and because the legs of the chair had no rug to grip just a slippery hard wood floor, the chair shot out behind her and she landed with quite the thud on her butt on the floor. She looked at me like, WTF? I was drinking water at the time and almost choked I was laughing so hard. She wasn't sure of she wanted to cry or laugh, too!

My water babies

As I was attempting to dress Emma this morning the usual struggle ensued. She didn't like the pink sunshine shirt that SHE PICKED OUT and started kicking and screaming as I attempted to put it over her head. At one point she yelled, "Help! Help! EVIE! HELLLLLLP!" (Evie being her best friend who lives about 4 blocks away.) As loud as she was yelling, it is possible Evie heard her...

Ben has his roll on. I just went in to check on him as he was fussing a bit and I watch him roll easily onto his belly and pass out. Am I supposed to roll him back onto his back or let him be comfy on his belly? So confusing...

We went swimming in the unheated pool over at Evie's this afternoon. It was freezing so Emma just kind of hung out on the steps for the majority of the time. Ben? Crazy kid couldn't get enough of the water. He was kicking, and smiling, and playing and overall loving the feeling of floating free. When I put him in the carseat on the side of the pool so I could play with Emma, he would fuss fuss fuss until I put him back in the arctic waters - then he would smile up a storm! I am guessing he has Daddy's blood in him and will end up a surfer, too.

Finally, Emma is finally getting how to interact with the "Noggin - it's like preschool on tv" cartoons that we watch together. The main characters are always asking the viewing audience questions that they are supposed to answer by yelling back at the tv. Today Emma was watching Ni Hao Kai Lan and Kai Lan asked if she should use the shorter string or the longer string to do whatever it was she was doing and Emma yells, "Short one!" I was like - Yay! you finally get it! The whole interaction thing! Tomorrow when she yells nonstop because of this positive encouragement, I just may poke myself in the eye with a fork, but today my baby girl - who is only 3 weeks away from turning 2 years old - showed signs of her mental growth. She's far from 'all growed up' and despite the tantrums, we are enjoying the ride.

'Scuse me!

You know how you have a song in your brain and you think the lyrics you are singing are correct even though they make no sense whatsoever? That is Emzilla these days...

She has gone from singing a random word here and there of a song to the complete song. She carries a pretty good tune, too - for a 23 month old! But don't try and correct her on the lyrics or she goes all fiesty on you. Her version of the classic "Old McDonald":

Ole McDonald had ferm
EIEIO
and on ferm he had cow
EIEIO
moo moo moo
moo moo moo
here moo, here moo
mooooooo
Ole McDonald had ferm
EIEIO!

Her pronunciation entertains me endlessly... I wish I could carry around a tape recorder and catch her random chattering.

For example, she is learning to say "excuse me" when she needs to interrupt a conversation, or she burps or farts - but she can't tell the difference between a burp and a fart - she calls them both burps.

Today Ben let out a ripper of a fart and she said, "Mama, Ben burped! 'Scuse me!!" - but, like her Mama, she didn't just speak the phrase, she said it all sing songy. Ha!

My own personal 'pioneer of pretend' continues to wow me with her play in the backyard. She is very independent and has no problem playing with her make believe friends on her own for chunks of time - although I know she would much prefer to have her girlfriend, Evie over - she asks for her 10 times a day - she really does quite well on her own. Today she had this whole "Where'd the ladybug go?" adventure going on while Ben and I were relaxing on the deck. She was talking to all the flowers and shrubs and grass and dinosaurs (yes, we have 'dinosaurs') in our backyard trying to find out where the make believe ladybug disappeared to.

I wonder how much extra money I could make if I rigged the house with webcams and charged $$ for people to just watch her go! go! go! She is certainly more entertaining than most sitcoms on tv these days.

Ahoy, maties!

Dressing Emzilla (or even changing her diaper for that matter) is a huge undertaking on a daily basis. She is absolutely convinced that I am trying to put "Ben's diaper!!!" on her, and the clothing is all "Not Emma's. Boys!!" I show her daily that Ben's diaper has a tiger on the front and hers has an elephant. That tends to give me about 6 seconds to get the diaper on and fastened before that explanation is no longer valid and she freaks out again.

I refuse to ask her what she wants to wear as that question leads to about 20 minutes of indecisiveness. I generally give her a choice, "Do you want to wear x or y?" She chooses one and then halfway through the dressing, she changes her mind as said choice is no longer girl's clothing but boy's.

I am challenged on a daily basis to come up with new ways to explain to her the difference between boys and girls clothes. It amuses me to no end to see her squirm and it pisses her off when I can't help but laugh at her ridiculousness!

On a silly note, this morning Ben was yammering on about this and that and is sounded quite like, "Aarrgh, aarghooo, aarrgh." Emma overhears his conversation and says, "Ben pirate?"

Google - friend or foe?

In the past week or so I have had to Google a few toddler dilemmas to get advice from the experts and not so experts on what to do when - say, a toddler sticks a crumbled up flower up her nose, or has smelly greasy stool (sorry, had to share...), and then, tonight, how much should I be worried that she shoveled an entire dune of sand into her left eye.

Compared to most moms, I think I am pretty low key and not much of a stressy-betty. But at what point am I forsaking my child's well being with my island attitude?

I don't know what happened to the flower up her nose. The more we wrestled so I could attempt to grab at it with tweezers, the further it went up her nostril. If it were a pebble or something not degradable, I would have been to the ER lickity split. But it wasn't a pebble, it was a flower and really, how much harm could it do while it rots away in her nose? (Truly, I think she swallowed it while snorting when we were wrestling...) But I am keeping my eye on it and it has been about 2 weeks and nothing smells foul just yet - except for her breath - but that is a whole other toothbrushing post!

I am waiting out the greasy poop for another day or so. It could be she is just drinking too much milk or it could be a parasite infection... or ten other things the internet suggests. If it is still lingering by Wednesday, I will call the doctor.

Now for our beach excursion... I mean not beach excursion, but that damn sandbox our neighbors gave us. I am beginning to understand why they wanted to get rid of it as it is just the dusty, dirty, pain in the sand-in-every-bed I was expecting it to be. Tonight Emma was playing in it after dinner and accidently tossed an entire shovelful of sand into her left eye. I didn't panic because I didn't want her to freak out, so I carried her into the bathroom and gently whisked away the larger part of the sand around her eye socket with a dry towel. Her eye immediately teared up and washed out the majority of it but I could see a few grains still floating. I knew there was no way she was going to let me rinse out her eye without freaking out and rubbing her eyes and making it worse by scratching up her cornea. So I am letting nature run its course - meaning I am letting her body flush the remaining grains with tears. I will keep my eyes on her eyes (and nose, and butt...) and my fingers crossed that she will be fine.

I often wonder how our parents raised us without the internet - and then I wonder if I would be better off without it and just called my mom when stuff happens... Or trusted my instincts - like so many Mamas do.

Daddy's girl...

How come - these days - when Mommy puts Emzilla to bed, she fusses and complains and hops out of bed and knocks on the door to get out (she can't manipulate the door knob yet), then drops to the floor and tries to peek out under the gap and yells to me to rescue her, "Help! Help, Mommy, help!" ...but when Daddy puts her to bed, she curls up like a good little girl and doesn't make a peep?

Hmmmmm.

But, it has only been 25 minutes - the night is young.

Ben and the Beast

Ben had his first bite of solid food today! We popped him in the high chair and made a mini-batch of rice cereal. I stood by with the camera as Daddy did the feeding - and Emzilla did the HOWLING. Once again, she was pissed that Ben was in her high chair! Check out the video and you can see that I am not exaggerating. Ben ate like a champion - sort of - he had a few bites, I don't know how much he actually digested... I guess I may find out tomorrow!

Emma continued to amuse me today with her speech and commands and imagination. At one point she was dancing around the living room with the letter ' E' refrigerator magnet on her head. I asked her what she was doing and she informed me, "Emma princess." I presume the E was her crown?

This evening I ran her a bath and plopped her into the bubbles. She immediately stood up and peed in the tub yelling, "Yay! Emma did it! Whohoo!" just like we do when she actually performs on the potty. She was so proud of herself so I didn't want to tell her that the tub wasn't quite the achievement I was looking for...

After her bath I was brushing her hair. I hit a few tangles and after a bit she informed me I was done with, "Mama, Stop it. All done. Stop it."

Lastly, it is now about 10 pm as I am writing this. I put her in bed at 8:30pm. She has been quiet until about 5 minutes ago when I heard her not even 2 year old knuckles rapping on her bedroom door. She hadn't fallen asleep yet - she's been laying quietly for 90 minutes - and just now has decided to let me know. As sleepy as I am now, I may beat her to dreamland...

Look out, Conan

This morning around 10:30 I was craving something sweet - knowing we had some chocolate chip cookies in the kitchen, I bee lined for the secret stash. I didn't want Emma to see me eating the cookie because, a) I didn't want her to ruin her appetite for lunch, and b) I didn't want to share! I wanted every last chocolatey morsel for my own fat! She was playing on the deck off the kitchen so I had my back to the door while I stealthly enjoyed my cookie. After I was finished I went outside to play with Emma. We started wrestling and she caught a whiff of my breath and stopped cold, "Mama, cookie?" So much for my ninja tactics!

Emma's imagination is growing by leaps and bounds daily. She has discovered the dogs in a whole new light, too. They aren't just doggies anymore, but play friends. Her favorite show on tv - Oswald - has a dog, Weenie, that he does everything with. Emma has picked up some of the plots from the show and acts them out. Today it was the "Hide and Seek" episode. I found her in the kitchen with her eyes covered counting to ten. Then she yelled, "Ready or not I come!" and chased Apollo around the house.

Later I listened as she rattled off this monologue before bed (a stall tactic - I presume), "Mama, wisten. Hairplane. Hear it? No see, mama, no see hairplane! Bwoon! Up sky. Bye, bwoon! Laaaaater! Mama, go see Raul? Laurie? No, mama, go Weavie! Ben crying. I know, I know, Ben."

There was no airplane, we haven't gotten a balloon in weeks, and Ben was smiling away in his bouncy chair. This girl simply LOVES the sound of her own voice.

Taken' care of bidness

Soooooo much fun stuff happened today... So, I will only hit the highlights - oh yes, and remind me to tell you about the flower shoved up the nose of Emzilla last week - I keep forgetting to write about it!

The older Em gets the more vocal she gets about her bodily functions (Uncle Pistachio and folks not related to me - feel free to skip to the end here...). I sometimes think she confuses pee and poop when she says to me, "Mommy, poopy."

Today, for instance, on four separate occasions she said, "Mommy, poopy." I, as usual, asked her poopy in diaper or poopy on potty. She answered, "Go poopy on potty." So I put her on the toilet and we chatted, sang songs, read various books, and NOTHING.

Finally, after dinner - just before I tossed her in the bathtub, she #2ed in her diaper. I cleaned her up and sent her and her nakedness into the bathroom to hop in the bath. I was 11 seconds behind her as I cleaned up the changing table.... When I walked into the bathroom she said, "Mommy, pee pee." And started stomping around in a big puddle on the floor!

Okay, I was wrong - she gets the difference between #1 and #2 - she was just a bit constipated today and it took the entire day to take care of bidness!

Ben, on the other hand, did not have a constipation problem today - quite the opposite. Every time I changed him today he had poo'd some clear liquid with what looked like pureed spinach. Considering the kid is still ingesting nothing but breastmilk - I can't even begin to explain ...

Aah, the joys of motherhood.

And, I promise not to talk about 'poop' for at least a week...

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly...

Daddy and I were at a conference all day on Saturday so Uncle Raul and Aunt Laurie volunteered to watch the bunch for the day. Thinking back, I think that is the first time in Ben's 4 1/2 months that we have been apart for that length of time. Is it bad for me to say that although I missed the littlies, I had an awesome day not being a responsible parent? I knew they were in very capable hands and I barely thought twice about them!

We leave in 4 weeks for our 10 day trip back east visiting grandparents. I am doing this trip solo so Daddy can concentrate on our financial future and although I am slightly intimidated about a 5 1/2 hour direct flight with a toddler and a baby (how ever will I pee?), I am sure it will be fine. A friend suggested I needed to grow a thicker layer of skin and just not worry when fellow passengers roll their eyes at me and my inevidably restless children. Feel free to give me travel advice with little kids!

Emma was eating breakfast this morning and a house fly flew by her. "Mama, a fly!" Then she pretended to catch it, "I got it! I got it!" Then she pretended to eat it, "Yum!" Where the hell did she get that from?

Wagon wonders

Mommy is very proud of herself. This afternoon at about 3pm, Fedex ground dropped off Emma's (early) birthday present from Gamma Woo - a Radio Flyer red wagon - that, by the way, came in pieces and needed to be put together. When I first pulled it from the box I was a bit intimidated, but I grabbed the instructions and step by 10 very long steps, I had the thing in working order.

Ben helped me put it together. When I was frustrated because I couldn't figure a step out, I would look over at him sitting in his chair watching me and he would smile his big goofy toothless smile and all of the sudden the screw I needed or washer I was missing would appear.

When Emma woke from her nap, I told her I had a surprise for her. She tends to be grumpy these days when she wakes up and wasn't very impressed with the surprise until she realized it belonged to her and then she wouldn't get out of the wagon for the next hour and a half. She loaded her dolls into it and tried pulling it around the back yard. She is not quite big enough, but I have no doubt this wagon will bring endless joy as she grows into it. Nice choice, Gamma Woo!

Phrase of the day: "No! Not yours. Emma's!" heard at least 15 times today...

I love Poltergeist

At least 3 days a week I come home to eat lunch, spend some quality time with the kids, and give Brenda a break from, well, mommying. This has to be one of the best perks of the work I do since I'm able to play with Emma while she's bright-eyed and while I still have my wits about me.

Emma's sense of independence is growing as fast as her vocabulary, giving her the stones to say NO, slap hands, and basically be a belligerent 2 year old. She's thankfully judicious with her tantrums, but the independent streak is definitely growing its roots.

Case in point: 2pm, Wed. I pop by for lunch and some QT with the kids. Emma's playing with her tea set, while mommy and I work on a project. Emma wanders down the hall towards the bedrooms, and then strangely the house goes quiet......Curious, I go searching for the one woman wrecking crew. In the bathroom unraveling the TP? Nope. In our bedroom trying on all of our shoes? Nope Nope. Well then she surely must be in her bedroom pulling the clothes out of the drawers, right? Not quite. Concerned, I ask Brenda, "Where's Emma?" She of course assumes that Emma is in plain sight and that we're playing a game and responds in singsong voice "I don't know? Where is Emma?". Now a twinge of panic sets in. I mean, I know she has hidden stuff all over the house, but she hasn't yet figured out how to hide herself. On purpose at least. Needless to say, I call out for Emma and a voice comes through the ether like Carol-Ann's through the TV in Poltergeist saying, "open door, open door!" In the closet, standing straight up with her face in a box of diapers, zero room to maneuver, is Emma all proud that she closed the door all on her own.

One day in not so distant future, when she's out with friends, I'll wish she was just locked in a closet and still wearing diapers.

Daddy

The Rhythm section

Today Emma decided to used two of her giant wooden puzzle pieces like cymbals. They have a peg sticking out of them and can be easily held and clapped together. The make a very loud clacking noise that pleases her immensely and an even louder screeching noise when it is your head being whacked between them.

Yep, you guessed it, Emma had one of her "I wonder how Ben will react if I do this to him" moments. Cracked the poor kid with equal force on both sides of his head. She won a trip to time out (the crib) where she spent 2 and a half hours (she fell asleep...). Ben was fine after a good 5 minutes of WTF? screaming. I also promised him a get out of jail free card when they get older and he cracks her a good one while playing. He accepted that, stop crying and we hung out all afternoon Emzilla-free...

Phrase of the day:

"No! Emma no like it!"

Hey Emma, wanna watch the Wonder Pets (one of her favorite shows)?
"No! Emma no like it!"

Emma, eat your green beans (her FAVORITE veggie).
"No! Emma no like it!"

Hey babe, let's go talk a bubble bath (she LIVES for bubbles).
"No! Emma no like it!"

I have know idea where she learned the phrase, but it cracked me up - because she would say "No! Emma no like it!" then do exactly what it was I was proposing.

For Grandparents reading pleasure:

Actual conversation this morning:

"Emma, if you have to poopy today tell Mommy and I'll put you on the potty."
"No."
"No? You don't want to go on the potty. But poopy on the potty is fun!"
"No, Mommy. Stop!"
"Stop what?"
"No poopy on the potty. Poopy diaper."

100 % pure lovin'

I realized today how madly in love with Ben I am. I went to a baby shower for a friend this afternoon and took Ben along. Emma stayed home with Daddy and had a blast. Ben and Austin (a 9 month old little dude) were the only men allowed at the festivities. There were about 30 ladies there and Ben charmed each and every one of them. He has developed the most amazing personality. He is such a chill kid, laughs on cue, smiles often, and I swear - he blushes when he knows some gal is gushing over how handsome he is. And the best part, he only has eyes for me. Yes, my ego is talking, but as he was passed from girl to girl today I could see him seeking me out with his big blue eyes. When we made eye contact, his eyes would sparkle and he would grin the biggest toothless grin. I know how much he loves Daddy, too, but right now while he is still a baby, I know he 'knows' me more. When he gets older, he will discover Daddy and how much fun he is as he tossing Ben into the air and plays all the fun games Daddy's are know to play. But for now, I will enjoy being in the moment with my son, looking into those eyes, snuggling in, kissing the back of his neck, the recipient of the best kind of affection - 100% pure unconditional love.

In less sappy news, Emma did not disappoint in church this morning. The service is one hour long and she was quiet for about 2 minutes 37 seconds. At one point she announced to everyone that she had a poopy diaper, which Daddy promptly changed. When he returned, we tag teamed and I chased after her as she ran up the aisle, tripped on her long dress, and ended up flat on her face announcing, "Emma okay. Emma okay." - to which all who heard couldn't help but chuckle. I know I need to grow a thicker skin and that her noise is worse in my ears than the others are thinking, but I don't want to be the Mom with "that kid" and I fear I am becoming that person. We are so very lucky she is cute and people forgive that blonde haired blue eyed little girl so very easily.
