Funday Sunday

We live for Funday (family day + Sunday). It's sunny today, cool because of the wind, but that didn't stop us from a raucous game of tennis on the lawn (Wimbleton here we come!) and some Chugginton action on the sidewalk. Ben continues the early morning rooster rising - made it to 6:00 this morning at least. Em slept in til 8:00 needing to reenergize after Georgie's 5th birthday party yesterday. We all actually crashed early last night after that fun filled event!

Tennis, anyone?
Yummmmmm, cupcakes.
Happy Birthday, George! SMILE!
Chugginton. Chugga chugga chugga, chugga chugga chugga. Sing it w me!
Mama was in charge of the face painting at the birthday party. Emma was my first client.

Liar liar pants on fire

So, Em has discovered lying. She is terrible at it and also now has a little brother who can communicate very well and rat her out when she misbehaves. I caught her in about ten lies - little ones - but lies none the less. She got a few time outs, a few threats of privileges being taken away, but she continued to fib nonetheless. I will attempt to nip it in the bud tomorrow. I have a devious plan which will, in truth, be a lie from me to her, but I am lying for a lesson. That's ok, right? I'll let ya know if it backfires...

Em's hair is getting impossibly long again - constantly getting caught in coat zippers, seatbelts, you name it. She freaks when we brush it but refuses to let us trim it. Today after an awesome hike at Avalon with some pals we haven't seen in a while, we relaxed and watched Tangled. In the end when Eugene does what he does to free Rapunzel from her evil fake Mom (don't want to ruin it for the readers who have yet to enjoy the flick - aren't I sweet?), well, let's just say that Eugene gave me a great idea. Anyone have a broken mirror shard lying about?

Play dates are great!

Em is on her Winter break all week so another week without school for her. We just got home from an awesome playdate with some preK pals. Of course, Ben was odd man out amongst the girls, but that didn't stop him from having a good time. Actually he spent the first 45 minutes doing the "Flashdance". He had to poop but just didn't have the nerve to go. Every 2 minutes he would ask me, "Mom, clean my butt?" (meaning he has to go). Finally after at least 7 times of trying, I finally got stern and grip locked his thighs on the big toilet and he finally gave in and pooped. We hooted and hollered and the other two sets of parents hooted and hollered - it was quite fantastic. Later when he had to pee, he said, "Mom, go make bubbles?" code word for his pee bubbling up when it his the toilet water. When he was done peeing, he asked TO SIT ON THE SEAT AGAIN to poop! But he just farted.

I feel like we finally have a breakthrough with the poops and I may get a few hours of my life back that I have been spending following him around when I know he had to go.

PHEW! Fingers crossed! :)

Random funnies return

Ben bounced back quick from his pink eye infection. He only woke up one morning with his eyes glued shut (unlike Emma who had three!). It was super cute, too. He was gently calling me from his bed, "Mom, come here! My eyes! My eyes are shut. I can't see my circles. I can't see my shiny eyes!"

Every day I pick up Em from preK she and the other kids take off for "the hill". They run around like madmen for about 5 minutes until we drag them into the cars. It finally gives us parents a chance to hang out and get to know one another, which is kinda cool considering our kids may be in school for many years to come together, and it gives the kids a chance to burn off some energy.  In watching Em run with the kids recently I realized she has finally "grown into" her legs. She used to NOT be very coordinated when running - Ben was faster than her, but gym class has done her good - she's a speed demon now and not a gangly leg in sight.

Ben received a blanket from a friend in our Church back in LA when he was born. We actually received lots of blankets, but the "foot print blankie" is the one he clung to and still does. He has recently taken to calling it "foot print blankie" and not just "blankie" which I find all too endearing. "Come on, Mom. Let's snuggle. Let's snuggle foot print blankie on de couch."

Whenever a dogs licks something up off the floor Ben exclaims, "Cass is drinking the floor." or "Dodo is drinking his feet." (Dodo licks his feet a lot.)

When Ben has to pee, he says, "Gotta make froggy water!" (His toddler potty is a frog.) We are encouraging him to use the big potty these days and he calls that, "making bubbles" as his pee bubbles up nicely when it hits the toilet water. (TMI?) He is still poop challenged and holds it to the last possible minute, then does the "flashdance" stomp before we grab his hips and hold him onto the potty. It is a giant pain because he is good at holding it and I lose a good hour of every day sitting on the floor near his potty encouraging him that it won't bite.

My Dad is "memory challenged" (I am guessing it's hereditary and I get it from him...). When we were visiting him in FL he kept calling to Ben "Benjamin Moore, get over here." or "Benjamin Moore, don't splash in the fountain." etc etc.  Every single time he said it I would reply, "Dad, he's not a can of paint." and my Dad would laugh and comment that for the life of him, he cannot remember that his name is Benjamin Clark even though I constantly remind him it's the street that Daddy and I fell in love on and built our house on.

During our travels through the airports, Ben rode in the pink umbrella stroller as per usual. Last trip he obsessively called it "his bike." This trip he called it "his scooter" and had a fit - as per usual -  whenever it had to go through an xray machine.

When we landed in NY it was about 9:30pm. Both kids stayed awake for the 2 1/2 hour flight. Ben's ears did not "pop" when we descended and as we were standing and waiting to get off the plane, he kept saying in a crazy loud voice so he could hear himself, "Got iPhone? Got iPad? Let's get off de plane! Come on, let's go!"  Everyone around us was cracking up - partly because of the shouting, and partly because of our little technophile.

Speaking of "cracking up" - Yesterday Emma was telling me about something a friend did at school that made her laugh - "She cracked me off, Mom!"

Tired, tired, tired

Earned my Mama badge today. Emma woke up at 4:45am and couldn't get back to sleep. Then Ben came out of their bedroom a little after 6am with nasty crusty eyes.

Pink eye strikes again!

Daddy held him down while I applied warm compresses to clear away the crustys. I then broke every parenting rule and immediately administered Emma's left over drops in hopes of nipping it in the bud fast. He had some yellow-green goo throughout the day, but not nearly as nasty and scary looking as Emma's.  The whites of his eyes are a bit pink and the under eye skin is red and sore looking, but I feel like we got to it before the infection had a chance to wreak the havoc it did on poor Em. I guess we will know more when he wakes up in the morning.

Needless to say we were on lockdown all day. I washed toys, I scrubbed surfaces, I went through a giant can of Lysol - even spraying our neighbors doorknobs and the stairwell railing in case he touched them. After the kids went to bed, I scrubbed down the bathroom and the dining room and living room and the comfy couch - I am headed back into the kitchen for round two of the great TOY scrub, but felt like taking a break and writing first. In hindsight, that was probably a bad idea because now the exhaustion is kicking in and I don't want to get up!

It is near impossible to get Ben to let us put the drops in his eyes. I have to hold him down practically sitting on him and PRY, no joke, his eyes open and pray one of the drops lands on his eyeball. He then proceeds to cry hysterically for a few minutes possibly washing away the medicine with his tears. Bribery does not work on this kid (Emma sat still for chocolate - go figure.).

Chocolate. That just may get me through the kitchen scour down.

Mother of the Year, AGAIN!

Wanna be as awesome as me?

Here's how you do it:

When your 3 year old is taking amoxicillin for an ear infection and all of a sudden he is napping when he hasn't napped in over six months, constantly mentions that his "mouth is scratching" and has redness around his eyes and thrush-like chapping around his mouth, simply ignore it because you are on vacation and since he is acting completely normal minus the naps, you just figure it will pass.

That's how you can be awesome like me.

...Yep, it seems as though Benny is having an allergic reaction to the amoxicillin even though he finished it up last Thurs - it is still in his system, and now that I think about it, I probably was overdosing him with it, too.

WOW. I am awesome. Benjamin of the future, I am sorry. Mommy promises to be more observant and attentive from now on - even if she is sleep deprived - because little man, I can't imagine my life without you. You make us so happy!

In return, when we are trying to give you allergy medicine, you need to swallow it! Stop spitting it out all over us because it will only help you if you ingest it.

Hangin' w Abuelita and Grandpop

What do we do when we visit Weston, FL? This kind of goodness:
Avoid the chairs with wheels on the tile floors!
Use Grandpop's foot rests as a snack sitting area.
Continue the tradition of feeding the ducks every morning!
Take naps!! (I think staying up way past his bed time is forcing him to power nap every afternoon!)
BUBBLES! Big GIANT ones. HUGE!
Ben is even big enough to get in on the action.
We also hit up the community playground, but not the pool. Only low 70s and cloudy during our stay this time. Boo! Wait - it's Winter in NY! Anything above 60˚ is a fabulous treat!

Random funnies

Last week, Emma announced that when she grows up she wants to be a Phys Ed teacher. And, just to clarify, NOT a gym teacher, but specifically a Phys Ed teacher...

Then on the Southwest airplane flying from Long Island to Tampa on Saturday afternoon she said, "Okay, when I am 21, I want to be a Gym teacher (yes, Gym teacher NOW) and then when I am 31, I want to be an airplane driver for New York West." I guess you get bored when you are a teacher having all that Summer vacation down time, so she is going to take pilot lessons.

Ben, who continues his eating challenged ways, is back on steak (wooHOOO! some protein!). He has eaten it almost every day here in FL. He has also been requesting "chickens" a lot = Wendy's chicken nuggests or restaurant kid's menu chicken strips.  On the airplane he did eat some airline snack mix. He ate a Chex square dusted with cinnamon sugar and said, "Oooh, Mommy, these delicious french fries!" equating them with the waffle fries he ate the previous weekend at a restaurant in our little village, Port Jefferson.

When we landed in Tampa, Grandpa picked us up at the airport and we headed west to Clearwater. Emma, who had been yearning to see the palm trees of Florida all week announced with surprise in her voice, "Mom! There are lots of regular trees in Florida, too!"

Ben was running through Grandpa's place when he tripped on his shoes and fell down and started to cry. Emma, who did not see it happen but heard the aftermath inquired, "What happened to Benny? Did Grandpa push him?"

Grandpa can be quite the teaser. He was trying to help me get Em's pjs on the other night and Em was being her usual pain in the butt streaking around the house shaking her booty. (Another glorious phrase she has learned in preK.)  Grandpa said, "Emma, get over here or I am going to spank your big fat booty." to which she replied not missing a beat, "No, Grandpa, I have the PERFECT booty and I'm gonna shake it in your face!" No self esteem issues here!

And, finally (because both kids are now awake and I need to put on my referee cap) on the way to the airport to head from Tampa to Fort Lauderdale to hang out with more Grandparents, Emma announced, "I wanna live in Florida because it starts with "F" and "F" is my favorite letter." Who knew?

How to pass the day...

...when u are on vacation with a contagious kid:
IHOP breakfast with the Eimers Clan.
Marbles in and out and in and out of the fountain.
Many rides like this around the neighborhood.
Soccer in the street. Grandpa's make great goalies.
Give your pink eye to 100s of kids before your Mom discovers it.
TRAINS!! Need I say more?
Super Duper AWESOME train ride around the grounds of Largo Park.
More pics to come. I don't have my camera cable with me to download them. Or my computer for that matter. (Photo credit for most of these pics goes to Aunt Patty [precisely why you actually see ME in a photo!] or my iphone.)

Family reunion, sorta

We were blessed to spend Saturday evening and all day Sunday with some of my first cousins and their kids aged 1 1/2 and 3. Everyone hit it off and it was fun watching the next generation meet and become fast friends. Sunday morning all 11 of us breakfasted at Ihop and then spent the morning at a giant playground. That particular park had a train ride that ran once a month and we were lucky enough to be there on train day. After a fifteen minute wait in line, we all boarded the train for the most relaxing ride all over the park on the miniature train. It was a good ten minute ride and the kids were in heaven. We came home from there and had a late yummy BBQ lunch. When we were done I noticed Em's one eye was looking a bit gooey. As her best pal was being treated for pink eye back in NY, I googled an urgent care and off we went. Yep, pink eye it was and we were off to the pharmacy. Boo! I can only imagine how many poor kids at that park she passed it on to, not to mention possibly our little cousins. Argh. We started treatment at 5:30 pm Sunday evening. At 4am she woke up with her eye glued shut. 15 min of warm compresses later, I pried open the eye and got a drop in it. By 10am her second eye was gooey. Double whammy - this one even more ferocious than the first. Luckily Ben has shown no signs of contracting it - possibly because he is on day 7 of a 10 day ear infection amoxicillin and it is working to keep the bacteria at bay? It is now Tuesday afternoon and she is finally showing signs of improvement. I hope!!

Florida time

We hopped on a plane to come see Grandpa Dave's new Winter home in Clearwater on Saturday. It was the bumpiest ride I have been on in a very long time and the seat belt sign was illuminated the entire 2 1/2 hour flight. That kinda sucked when you have two kids who needed to poop at EXACTLY the same time during the trip. Thankfully I had put a pull up on Ben for the ride. He took full advantage of it while Emma and I were being chastised by the flight attendant for being out of our seats. It took every last ounce of discipline I had not to express some super choice words to the rude woman who has obviously never had children. When Em was done and we returned to our seats I was super thankful the flight was empty and we had chosen to sit all the way in the back because it STUNK really bad! Ben pooped and the pull up did not contain it. It took ten minutes and half a pack of wipes to clean the kid up and get new clothes on him! The whole time he kept saying, "Go Grandpa's and take a bath?" fingers crossed tomorrow's flight from Tampa to Fort Lauderdale is less eventful.

Our Stud Muffin

Warning: this post is for family and friends with young children. It is chock full of TMI!

Ben has only had two pee pee accidents since we started training him 11 days ago. TWO! Where did this kid come from? He is even waking up dry every morning. How is it my 3 year old is waking up dry, but my 4 1/2 year old still wakes up with a five pound pee pee pull up?

He is still hesitant about BMing on the potty. He dances around quite a bit then at the very last minute, he will hover over the froggy potty - as if the seat were burning hot and he cannot sit on it! The good news is, today he danced, hovered, and pooped. We cheered and cleaned up, then minutes later he came running back over to me, "My butt! my butt!" I slipped the potty under him and he squirted out some more. (WHAT?? I told you this was a TMI post meant for those who care most!) The fact that he needed to finish up and he let me know makes me believe that the kid is truly trained. Halleluja!

Ben-isms from the past few days:

1) At the pediatrician for his 3 year well visit, Ben did a mediocre job of letting the doctor check him out. For the first time ever, they WERE able to get a good eye test done (think Star Trek / view master toy), his vision is perfect (or so the fancy machine says!). They then tried for a hearing test but the kid started hollering, "Nooooo, no ears. Go Doctor LIVING ROOM!" inferring he was DONE with this part of his check up and wanted to play in the waiting room with the toys and the Nick jr on tv! The eyes/ear administrator had never heard a kid refer to the waiting room in that manor and thought it was awesome. This Mommy did, too!

Well visit stats: I can't remember exactly, but he was about 35 lbs which is 75th percentile (HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? The kid does not eat anything anymore... Case in point: for dinner tonight, the kid ate 6 spoonfuls of Trader Joe's all natural peanut butter for dinner. That's it! And yes, he was - not double, not triple, but "sixtle" dipping with his spoon into the jar - meaning, when you come to visit me and I offer you a PBJ for lunch, request a fresh jar...). And 38 inches or so tall - again 75th percentile...

2) Have I mentioned this before? If so, it is well worth mentioning again. I LOVE Ben's interpretation of everything. One of my favorites is PETCO. The closest one to us is next to our Trader Joe's and we get there about once a month because it is a bit out of the way from our usual triangle of life. (Home, School, BJs.) Whenever we pull into the parking lot, Ben immediately sees the PETCO sign and logo which happens to be a red dog and a blue cat. He ALWAYS says, "Go Clifford and the Kitty store, Mom?" (Clifford, the big red dog... Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?")

3) Ben often uses the phrase, "I'm dizzy!" which for a freshie 3 year old, I think, is quiet brainy. For example, if he and big sister are spinning around and he falls to the ground, "I'm dizzy!" Perfectly normal... It's the - riding in the back seat of the car and Daddy takes a sharp turn too quick, "Whoa, Dad, I'm dizzy!" that cracks us up most! He uses it every time he loses his balance, whether he is simply running down the hall and trips or he jumps off a step and misjudges the landing and falls to the side, "Whoa, I'm dizzy!"
